When will the the Mechanical & Electrical Systems Alternate-Item-Types (AIT) be implemented?
The updated Mechanical & Electrical Systems division will roll out beginning February 2007. Please refer to the Council's website for periodic updates.

Will there be a blackout period for the switchover to ME AIT?
No blackout period is anticipated.

How are the AIT questions different from regular multiple-choice questions?
Currently, each question has four options to choose from. In the new 'Check-All-That-Apply' items, the question will have six options to choose from and the candidate must select all that are correct. In the 'Fill-in-the-Blank' questions, a calculation is required. The candidate must input the correct answer, no options are given. Sample 'Check-All-That-Apply' and 'Fill-in-the-Blank' questions may be seen at http://www.ncarb.org/are/AIT.html

How many AIT questions will be on my test? Is it a set percentage? A range?
Approximately 10-15% of the division will be AIT questions.

Will I be given more time to answer the AIT questions?
No, the exam time has not changed.

Do the AIT questions count more than a regular multiple choice question?
No, all questions are scored equally.

Can I get partial credit on the AIT questions?
No partial credit is given.

What exam will be next to have the AITs added? When will it/they be implemented?
We anticipate that AIT questions will appear in additional divisions in July 2008. Please refer to the Council's website for periodic updates.
