NCARB assists architects in keeping their skills and knowledge up to date through its Professional Development Program of self-study courses. Since its implementation in 1993, the program has grown to include 25 (and counting!) AIA- and state-approved self-study monographs.

Registration Renewal and Lifelong Learning
In increasing numbers, NCARB's member boards are requiring evidence of lifelong learning when architects apply for registration renewal. The Professional Development Program recognizes the need for a convenient and affordable continuing education resource.

Vital Topics
NCARB monographs address a wide range of vital topics that relate to new and evolving aspects of architectural technology, technical systems, and regulation, including:

  • mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • solar energy
  • structural problems, including seismic and wind loadings
  • building and life-safety code changes
  • rules issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • contractual and legislative issues affecting the public
  • construction systems and techniques
  • the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • ethics

NCARB publishes and/or revises at least two monographs each year.

Monograph Quizzes: Open Book and Online!
Just how is continuing education measured? By passing a monograph quiz, of course! Each monograph includes a short, open-book, multiple-choice quiz on its subject matter. And, for added convenience, all monograph quizzes are now available on the NCARB web site. This option provides test takers with something approximating instant gratification: finish an online quiz, hit send, and, voilá, results are immediately available.

Although individuals may study the monographs independently, group discussions of the topics are encouraged. Completing a monograph quiz, however, is an individual endeavor, and collaboration is prohibited.
