Experience Requirement by Jurisdiction

This information was last updated on September 16, 2016.

On June 29, NCARB’s experience program was renamed the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and updated to reflect modern practice. The AXP now requires licensure candidates to document 3,740 hours of experience in six areas.

Your jurisdiction may have additional requirements, as each jurisdiction sets its own requirements for initial licensure. Some may continue to require 5,600+ hours and/or have a minimum employment duration requirement.

This evolving chart breaks down each jurisdiction's experience requirement for licensure candidates with a degree from a NAAB-accredited program. For those without a degree from a NAAB-accredited program, your jurisdiction may have additional experience requirements beyond completion of the AXP. Review the registration requirements page for those requirements.
