Supplementary Education

Supplementary education activities are activities that can be completed outside of the work place.

Supplementary education activities are subject to the following conditions:

  • You can only earn a maximum of 1,880 training hours for supplementary education credit
  • You can only earn a maximum of 1,800 training hours for the EPC.
  • You can only earn a maximum of 600 minimum (core) training hours through EPC
  • You can earn no more than 40 minimum (core) training hours in any of the IDP training areas 1-16 by completing supplementary education.
  • Supplementary education activities that qualify as minimum (core) training units are not considered in the maximum 1,880 training hours allowed in supplementary education.

In most cases, you do not need to be employed in one of NCARB’s work settings to receive credit.

You may earn training hours through the following NCARB-recognized supplementary education activities:

Certificate Programs
40 training hours may be earned by passing the LEED AP, CDT, CCS, or CCCA exams. A copy of your accreditation must be submitted to NCARB. You do not need to be employed to earn credit.

NCARB Professional Conduct Monograph
Interns employed or not, may earn 16 minimum (core) training hours in Training Area 15 – “Office Management” by reading the NCARB Professional Conduct Monograph and passing the related quiz.

Post-Professional Degree
You can earn 936 training hours in supplementary education for a post-professional degree after a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by NAAB or CACB. Credit hours must be in subjects evaluated by NCARB as related to architecture. You do not need to be employed to receive credit.
