The number of people completing the ARE—all requisite divisions—has increased since its initial delivery in 1997. While very few divisions of the exam were administered or completed in this first year, the number of candidates completing the exam quickly reached a few thousand over the next few years. On average, approximately 2,300 candidates complete the ARE every year.
The peak completions in 2008 and 2009 reflect the increase in testing volumes from candidates transitioned from ARE 3.1 to 4.0. After this transition, the number of candidates completing the exam returns to trend.
