This session will explain the recently expanded Intern Development Program (IDP) supplementary education opportunities for interns. Supplementary education now qualifies as both core and elective hours for IDP credit, which provides greater flexibility for interns to complete their internships. The broader guidelines also better serve interns who are in alternative careers or currently unemployed. In addition, the changes give interns greater control of their internship experiencemore flexibility to learn and the ability to complete IDP on their own if an employer cannot provide all necessary work experiences. The session will present new opportunities and case studies for IDP supplementary education, including community-based design, design competitions, exercises from the Emerging Professional's Companion and NCARB Professional Conduct Monograph, and site visits with mentors. New supplementary education opportunities include all AIA-approved continuing education courses and credit for passing the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Exam or earning CSI certificates. Beneficial for supervisors, mentors, and interns.
