NCARB Adds New Titles to Continuing Education
The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards introduces its two newest monographs, Low-Slope Roofing II and Cracking the Codes. Both titles are now available through the Council’s Professional Development Program monograph series.
Low-Slope Roofing II is the companion volume to Low-Slope Roofing I. Its main objective is to investigate alternatives to traditional built-up roofing, including modified bitumen, single-ply, sprayed polyurethane foam, metal, and liquid applied systems. Author Thomas Lee Smith, AIA, RRC, also discusses reroofing projects, sustainably designed systems, and construction contract administration and warranty issues related to roofing.
Those successfully completing the Low-Slope Roofing II quiz will earn 14 professional development units and 14 AIA Learning Units in health, safety, and welfare. Low-Slope Roofing II will sell for $175 (current NCARB Record holders) and $245 (non-NCARB Record holders).
In Cracking the Codes, Barry D. Yatt upends the idea that building codes and standards are obstacles to design. Offering a down-to-earth approach, Yatt provides a sound overview of regulatory issues. Monograph chapters move through each stage of the planning process to identify and consolidate the basic regulatory requirements that must be addressed. In addition to the model building codes, including the International Building Code, Cracking the Codes covers zoning ordinances and covenants, as well as rules related to accessibility, historic preservation, environmental quality, and consumer protection, among other critical issues.
Two quizzes have been developed for Cracking the Codes, and may taken individually or together and in any order. The first quiz covers chapters 1-6, and the second quiz covers chapters 7-12. The successful completion of each quiz will earn the test taker 8 professional development units and 8 AIA Learning Units in health, safety, and welfare. Quiz #2 meets the Texas requirement for one hour of instruction in issues related to barrier free design. The complete Cracking the Codes set (one monograph and two quizzes) will sell for $200 (current NCARB Record holders) and $270 (non-NCARB Record holders). The monograph and one quiz will sell for $125/$195, and an individual quiz will sell for $75.
The NCARB Professional Development Program monograph series was created in 1993 in order to address the increasing need for continuing education and professional development verification. Low-Slope Roofing II and Cracking the Codes join the following titles already available: the revised and updated Energy-Conscious Architecture, Why Buildings Fail, Sustainable Design, Professional Conduct, Low-Slope Roofing I, Seismic Mitigation, Subsurface Conditions, Wind Forces, and Fire Safety in Buildings. The series is a portable resource investigating current topics of interest to practicing architects. All U.S. jurisdictions accept the PDP monographs for compliance with state continuing education requirements. To order a monograph or any other title from NCARB’s Professional Development Program, contact the Council at 202/783-6500 for an order form. Or visit NCARB’s web site at [www.ncarb.org/publications].
