NCARB's 2011 Survey of Registered Architects

Washington, DC—The 2011 survey of US architectural registration boards by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) indicates that there are currently 104,301 registered architects in the United States. This represents a 1 percent decrease in licensed architects from last year’s survey. Data was collected in August 2011 from the jurisdictions and reflects July 2010 through June 2011.

The 2011 survey also reveals that there are 117,994 reciprocal (out-of state) architects, for a total of 222,295 registrations. This represents a 1 percent increase in reciprocal licenses and overall registrations. California has the highest number of resident architects (15,575) and the highest number of total registrations (19,482).

NCARB collects data for the survey from its 54 Member Boards, which includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB assists its member registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.
