Chicago, IL—Over one hundred students, interns, and architects attended an outreach presentation hosted by AIA Chicago featuring National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ (NCARB) staff. NCARB’s Assistant Director, Intern Development Program (IDP) Nick Serfass, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Manager, IDP Martin Smith, AIA, NCARB, LEED GA, took attendees through the path to licensure during this presentation held in the historic ballroom at the Art Institute of Chicago.
“Every path is a little different,” said Serfass. “You need to pick the path that is right for you and then create a plan.”
Smith gave an overview of the IDP, and stressed the importance of the knowing the requirements in your own jurisdiction. “Every jurisdiction is a little different,” said Smith. “Illinois is a little different from Wisconsin and they’re both a little different from Indiana. You need to meet the requirements in the jurisdiction you would like to earn your initial license first.”
Serfass and Smith also reviewed all the resources NCARB provides to help students and interns along the way, including the IDP Guidelines, the ARE Guidelines, the ARE exam guides and practice program, and the registration board licensing requirements survey. “For any question I get asked, the answer is almost always in one of these resources,” said Serfass.
