2013 NCARB Annual Meeting: Celebrating a New Path

20 June 2013

San Diego, CA—President/Chair of the Board Ronald B. Blitch, FAIA, FACHA, NCARB, called to order the 94th Annual Meeting of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in San Diego, CA, today.

A New Path: ARE 5.0
The Annual Meeting commenced as representatives from all 54 member registration boards learned about what’s in store for the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®). The NCARB Board of Directors has determined that the best option for proceeding with the next version of the exam involves the creation of new “performance item type” questions. These questions will continue to include graphics, but without the current test format of separate graphic vignettes. The next version of the exam, ARE 5.0, is expected to launch in late 2016. Inspirational Lessons on Creativity and Collaboration from Disney
Bruce Kimbrell, site leader for Disney Institute West Coast operations, delivered an inspirational keynote address, offering lessons on creativity and collaboration gleaned from decades of growth that began with the pioneering and risk-taking spirit of founder Walt Disney. He described the company’s “’chain of excellence’ … [in which] leaders genuinely care for their cast members; the cast genuinely care for themselves, each other and their guests; and satisfied guests lead to repeat business.” Kimbrell shared the key components to Disney’s collaborative culture: passion for the purpose, shared values, communication, trust, and variety of perspectives. He held that organizations looking to perpetuate the creative process “must create a culture of ‘yes, and…’ and ‘yes, if…’” He encouraged attendees to engage in a continuous improve process, while also taking risks and thinking outside the box.

In the afternoon, attendees took part in workshops where they explored future development and delivery options for the ARE, best practices for creating effective jurisdiction enforcement models, the latest issues confronting the regulatory community, and how to approach updating a state’s Practice Act.
