NCARB Prize Program: 2001-2011

NCARB Prize for Creative Integration of Practice and Education in the Academy

NCARB celebrated the 10th and final year of the NCARB Prize in 2011. Over its 10-year history, the NCARB Prize has recognized over 76 projects from 43 different architecture schools and NCARB has awarded over $600,000 to architecture schools to support the integration of practice and education in the academy.

Background

The NCARB Prize was initiated in 2001 in response to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s report, Building Community: A New Future for Architecture Education and Practice (The Boyer Report). As envisioned by Peter Steffian, FAIA, who served as Council president in 2001, the NCARB Prize Program was designed to encourage, reward, and showcase diverse programs and activities that wholly integrate practice and education in an academic setting. NCARB's 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture underscored the findings of "The Boyer Report" and identified specific examples of the disparity between practice and education. It identified five domains and over 100 knowledge/skills that the profession rated as important for recently licensed architects practicing independently. Seventeen knowledge/skills were identified as being acquired after licensure, despite the fact that all were designated as essential for recently licensed architects practicing independently.

Architecture schools with programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and architecture schools with programs that are candidates for NAAB accreditation were eligible to submit projects. Projects must have involved a non-faculty architect practitioner, have been offered as part of the architecture curriculum for academic credit, and have commenced no earlier than and have been completed or in progress by the previous four academic terms. NCARB Prize Recipients

NCARB awarded one $25,000 grand prize and up to five awards of $7,500 each through this prestigious program. All eligible submissions were reviewed by the NCARB Prize jury, which was composed of members of NCARB's Practice Education Committee and academic representatives (administrative leaders, department heads, or chairs) of schools with architecture programs accredited by the NAAB.

The NCARB Prize jury met in the spring of each year and awards were announced during the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Annual Meeting.
