ARE 4.0 will be launched in July 2008. However, to ease candidates through the transition there will be a one year period where both ARE 3.1 and ARE 4.0 will be administered.
Candidates currently taking the ARE should take advantage of this extra year to complete ARE 3.1 and avoid converting to ARE 4.0.
Doing so may eliminate the need to repeat previously passed portions of the exam.
