| ARE Eligibility Changes as of October 2007 |
| In June, NCARB’s Member Boards voted to approve the ARE Timing resolution granting early eligibility to the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) prior to the completion of the Intern Development Program (IDP). Now, each state board must decide individually if concurrent completion of IDP and ARE will be allowed. The chart below lists the status of implementation plans for individual boards. Please contact your state board for the latest information regarding IDP and ARE timing. |

The Alabama Board already allows concurrent IDP and ARE. |

Architect Board members will made a recommendation to the Alaskan Board at their meeting on November 8-9, 2007. |

The Arkansas State Board of Architects has started a “rules review” to change its current law to reflect the ARE Timing resolution. |

The Illinois Board is in the process of submitting changes to the Rules in order to allow the ARE in conjunction with the professional degree and enrollment in IDP. It will be a minimum of six months before the Rules can be changed. |

| Iowa |
The Iowa Architectural Examining Board has already "noticed" rules to allow early access. The first possible effective date will be February 2008. The board will entertain approval of a waiver of the current rule by any candidate seeking access prior to the effective date. |

The Kansas Board follows NCARB guidelines for access to the ARE. Candidates may now begin taking the ARE once they have completed an accredited degree and enrolled in IDP. |

The rule allowing candidates to test prior to the completion of IDP received the final signature by the governor. The rule went into effect on September 19, 2007. |

| New Hampshire |
The New Hampshire Board of Architects voted unanimously on July 12, 2007 to allow candidates who possess a NAAB-accredited degree in architecture to sit for the Architect Registration Examination prior to completion of the NCARB Intern Development Program.
Candidates will not be able to sit for the ARE in advance of IDP until administrative rules outlining the change in procedure are adopted. The Board is in the process of drafting administrative rules to facilitate this change in procedures and expects the rules to be adopted in 2008. |

| New Mexico |
At the August 17 Board meeting the New Mexico Board voted to change the rules related to registration, training, and examination to allow those who have enrolled in IDP to take the ARE. This rule change went into effect September 22, 2007. |
| New York |
The New York Board will be looking at a regulatory change effective in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2008, permitting ARE concurrent with IDP upon enrollment in IDP and a NAAB-accredited degree. |
| North Carolina |

| North Dakota |

| Ohio |
A public hearing on IDP + ARE was held on Sept. 28. A rule allowing IDP + ARE went into effect on November 5, 2007. The only prereqisites are the completion of a professional degree (transcript required) and an NCARB Record. |
| Oklahoma |
The Oklahoma Board met and passed a policy to enact that candidates be able to take five sections of the exam after enrolling in IDP and the last two after completing the degree and training. A timeline for implementation is still being worked out. |
| Oregon |
The Oregon Board discussed proposed changes at their Sept. 14 meeting. Board members were unable to come to a conclusion and continued their discussion of changes at the following board meeting on Oct. 26. The rulemaking process has begun and there will be a rule hearing on January 8, 2008 about the issue. If approved, the new rules could go into effect in early 2008. |

The Puerto Rico Board already allows concurrent IDP and ARE. |
| Rhode Island |
The Rhode Island Board will discuss possible changes in October. |
| South Carolina |
The South Carolina Board will propose statute revisions for legislative approval in 2008 that will require applicants to hold an accredited degree, be currently enrolled in, and actively participating in IDP in order to be approved to take the ARE. Until the legislature approves this change, South Carolina applicants must complete IDP prior to applying to the Board to take the ARE. |
| South Dakota |
The South Dakota Board follows NCARB guidelines for access to the ARE. Candidates now begin taking the ARE once they have completed a NAAB accredited degree and are enrolled in IDP. |
| Tennessee |
The Tennessee Board is currently in the process of changing its rules to allow candidates to sit for the ARE before completion of IDP. Concurrent IDP and ARE will take effect on March 1, 2008. |
| Texas |
The Texas Board already allows concurrent IDP and ARE. |
| Utah |
As of December 24, 2007, candidates in Utah may to sit for the ARE once they have completed the education requirement. The “Architect Licensing Act Rules, R156-3a” that includes this change can be found on the Architecture page of the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing web site. |

The Vermont Board already allows concurrent IDP and ARE. |
| Virgin Islands |

The Virginia Board started the process to amend its regulations to permit applicants to begin taking the ARE upon enrollment in IDP on September 7, 2006. It takes approximately 18 to 24 months for regulations to be changed in Virginia. |
| Washington |
The Washington State Board for Architects will start allowing early entry on January 1, 2008. |
| West Virginia |
The Board Members made the motion to permit the administering of the ARE Examination to any applicant that has attained an architectural degree from any NAAB accredited institution and is enrolled and participating in (or has completed) the Intern Development Program. This motion brings the WV policy on ARE sequencing in line with the NCARB Policy as adopted through the passage of Resolution 07-8 passed by the delegates at the NCARB Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. |
| Wisconsin |
The Wisconsin Board already allows concurrent IDP and ARE. |
| Wyoming |
Wyoming rules do not require any changes when NCARB changes procedure. The Wyoming Board will allow candidates to begin testing once enrolled in IDP. |
