IDP 2.0 Final Phase: 3 April 2012

The final phase of IDP 2.0 will go into effect on 3 April 2012. As an IDP supervisor, you need to aware of the rule changes and how they impact your interns. You are an active participant in providing them experience that will prepare them for licensure.

This implementation will include:

  • New experience categories and areas
  • Simplified experience settings
  • New electronic experience reporting system
  • Credit for academic internships
  • Broader definition of an IDP supervisor

The Basics
Here are few things you should be aware of to help your intern(s) prepare for the rollover to IDP 2.0:

  • All hours will be rolled over to IDP 2.0.
  • The total hours required to complete the IDP—5,600—will remain the same.
  • The total core minimum hours required to complete the program is increasing to 3,740 for everyone—an increase of 20 hours from the current requirement.
  • Interns that have completed the IDP prior to 3 April 2012 will not be impacted by the new requirements.
  • IDP 2.0 updates the IDP requirements to more closely align with the practice of architecture today. Changes were derived from the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture

More information on the rules can be found in the Interns' IDP 2.0 Rollover Guide and at www.ncarb.org/idp2.

Current Requirements vs. IDP 2.0
Your interns need to understand the following:

IDP 2.0 Experience Categories and Areas
The current training requirement will be replaced with four experience categories and 17 experience areas relevant to architecture practice today.
Learn more

Core Minimum Requirements: Old vs. New
The core minimum hours required for several areas and categories are changing. If an intern has satisfied the core minimum hours for an area under the current program, he or she will be exempt from meeting the core minimum hours in the corresponding experience area under the new program. If an intern has met all of the core minimum requirements within a category, an intern will be exempt from the new category requirement. All interns must still satisfy the 3,740 core minimum hours required, but the additional hours may be earned in any area or category.

Experience Settings: Old vs. New
Interns must earn a minimum of 1,860 hours in experience setting A. Experience Settings O and S have maximum allowable hours. All submitted or approved experience will be rolled over to the new experience settings. If an intern's experience earned through existing work settings exceeds the maximum allowable hours that can be earned in the corresponding IDP 2.0 experience setting, then he or she will be granted a one-time waiver to the maximum allowable hours. If the intern is granted a one-time waiver, he or she will not be allowed to earn any additional hours in the new experience setting.

The Rollover

The electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e-EVR) system will be shut down at noon EDT 3 April 2012 to rollover your intern(s) experience to a new reporting system, which will be available on 5 April 2012. You will not be able to review or approve experience between April 3 - 5.

Here is how the rollover will work:

  • All experience entered into the e-EVR prior to 3 April 2012 will be rolled over to IDP 2.0.
  • An intern's hours must be submitted to a supervisor, mentor, or NCARB and be in the "submitted" or "approved" status by noon EDT 3 April 2012 to qualify for exemptions or waivers. Learn more
  • Hours in the saved status will not be considered for an exemption or waiver.
  • All hours are subject to review and evaluation by NCARB for compliance with the program. Experience must be validated and subsequently approved by NCARB for an exemption or waiver to be finalized.

You should meet with your intern(s) well in advance of 3 April 2012 to map out a plan for the rollover and to review all outstanding experience reports. Experience reports must be submitted or approved prior to April 3 2012 to qualify for exemptions or one-time waivers. Experience reports do not need to be approved by this date. It is important as a supervisor or mentor that you encourage your interns to understand the rollover requirements and submit their experience.

Preparing for the Rollover

There are several things you can do to help your intern(s) prepare the rollover to IDP 2.0 in April:

  • Read the Interns' IDP 2.0 Rollover Guide.
  • Read and understand the new experience settings and how the rollover may change the opportunities within your firm.
  • Meet with your intern and go over their progress through the program.
  • Encourage your interns to submit experience to you well in advance of 3 April 2012.
  • Identify opportunities for them to earn experience in training areas that they still need to meet the requirements.
  • Discuss supplementary education opportunities that may assist them in meeting the current requirements of the program.
  • Go over experience reports with your intern(s) prior to submittal—returning the report for edits or rejecting it may impact their ability to receive exemptions or waivers after 3 April 2012.
  • Approve experience reports in a timely manner.
  • If your work setting under the current program is B, C, D, or E, review your new experience setting with your intern.
