IDP 2.0 Timeline

In 2007, NCARB conducted the most recent Practice Analysis of Architecture. For the first time, the findings of this study were used to determine the requirements for the IDP in addition to the ARE test specifications. The new program requirements, which have been rolled out as "IDP 2.0," help ensure that interns acquire the comprehensive training that is essential for competent practice and make reporting experience fundamentally easier.

9 April-7 May 2007
Over 50,000 architects from across the country and Canada were invited to complete the 2007 Practice Analysis survey. NCARB received nearly 10,000 responses. [more]

2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture released. [more]

28 June 2008
The Six-Month Rule is approved by NCARB's Member Boards. [more]

31 December 2008
NCARB launches electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e-EVR) system for electronic submission of IDP experience reports and supervisor approval. [more]

28 April 2009
NCARB announces the phased implementation of IDP 2.0, which is based on the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture.

1 July 2009

  • The Six-Month Rule goes into effect for interns that established an NCARB Record on or after 1 July 2009. [more]
  • Earn elective units for LEED accreditation and specified Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) certificate programs whether or not employed. [more]
  • Earn core units for reading and passing the related quiz for NCARB's Professional Conduct monograph. [more]
  • Earn core units for completing Emerging Professional's Companion (EPC) activities in a qualified work setting. [more]
  • Earn elective units for AIA continuing education whether or not employed. [more]


March 2010
IDP 2.0 experience categories and areas released in spring 2010 Direct Connection.*

1 January 2010

  • Training units became training hours with one training unit equaling eight training hours.
  • Definition of "direct supervision" modified to allow IDP supervisors to supervise their interns through a mix of personal contact and remote communication. [more]
  • Earn core hours for completing EPC activities whether or not employed. [more]
  • Earn elective hours for completing EPC exercises whether or not employed. [more]
  • IDP mentors may certify supplementary education.


1 July 2010

The Six-Month Rule goes into effect for all interns. [more]

  • New opportunities for core hours: Site visits with mentor, design competitions, and community-based design centers/collaboratives.

IDP 2.0 section of NCARB website is launched. The section provides information and tools to help prepare interns, supervisors, and mentors for the rollover to IDP 2.0. It includes:

  • Updated information on IDP 2.0 experience categories and areas
  • Updated information on IDP 2.0 experience settings
  • Timeline of important dates for IDP 2.0

NCARB releases the Interns' IDP 2.0 Rollover Guide and webpages that explains rollover rules.


21 December 2011
The IDP 2.0 Calculator is available to help interns see how their hours will rollover to IDP 2.0. [more

2 February 2012
Information released on how applicants for NCARB certification will be affected by IDP 2.0. [more]

3 April 2012 
The electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e-EVR) system shuts down on April 3 and data is converted to the IDP 2.0 format. Experience submitted after this date will be in the IDP 2.0 format.

New electronic system to report IDP experience available in My NCARB. Any reports submitted on April 5 will be submitted in the IDP 2.0 format.

Note: When Phase Three is implemented, all existing hours in the e-EVR will be converted to IDP 2.0. All new experience reports will be submitted under the rules of IDP 2.0.

* Please note that components of IDP 2.0 have been updated since it was originally announced. Please refer to the IDP 2.0 section for the rules and requirements. All information is subject to change. The official rules and requirements will be available in the IDP 2.0 Guidelines in early 2012.

2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture
The purpose of a Practice Analysis is to identify the tasks and knowledge/skills that are important for recently licensed architects, practicing independently, to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Nearly 200 tasks and knowledge/skills identified in the 2007 survey were verified as important and will be utilized in the future development of the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) and the Intern Development Program (IDP).
