Meeting NCARB Experience Requirements

meeting ncarb experience requirements

Each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands sets its own education, training, and examination requirements for initial and reciprocal registration in their jurisdiction. Every jurisdiction requires that interns acquire experience under the direct supervision of a registered architect for some period of time.

Most of NCARB’s 54 jurisdictions have adopted the Intern Development Program (IDP) as their training requirement for initial registration.

Interns must acquire 5,600 training hours to satisfy the IDP Training Requirement. One training hour equals one hour of acceptable experience in an IDP work setting.

It is an intern’s responsibility to understand the requirements of any jurisdiction where they may seek either initial or reciprocal registration. More information on jurisdictional requirements can be found here: Registration Boards Requirements.

The NCARB web site provides an overview of the Intern Development Program. All participants in the Intern Development Program must adhere to the rules and regulations defined in the IDP Guidelines and the Handbook for Interns and Architects.

How is the definition of “direct supervision” changing?

Under the current definition of “direct supervision” an IDP supervisor must work in the same office as the intern where the supervisor has both control over and detailed professional knowledge of the work prepared under his or her supervision. On 1 January 2010, an IDP supervisor will be allowed to supervise an intern through a mix of personal contact and remote communication (e.g. e-mail, online markups, webinars, and internet) such that “the IDP supervisor has control over the work of the intern and has sufficient professional knowledge of the supervised work so that the IDP supervisor can determine that the intern understands and is performing his or her work experience within the professional standard of care.”

How does completing IDP relate to getting an NCARB Certificate?

Completion of the IDP is one of the requirements for NCARB certification. To learn more about the NCARB certification process and the benefits of becoming NCARB certified see the Certification & Reciprocity section.
