IDP 2.0 Final Phase Goes Into Effect 3 April 2012
The final phase of IDP 2.0 will go into effect for interns on 3 April 2012. This implementation will include:
- New experience categories and areas
- Simplified experience settings
- New electronic experience reporting system
- Credit for academic internships
- Broader definition of an IDP supervisor
The Basics
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for the final phase:
- All hours will be rolled over to IDP 2.0.
- The total hours required to complete the IDP—5,600—will remain the same.
- The total core minimum hours required to complete the program is increasing to 3,740 for everyone—an increase of 20 hours from the current requirement.
- If you have completed the IDP prior to 3 April 2012, you will not be affected by the new requirements.
- IDP 2.0 updates the IDP requirements to more closely align with the practice of architecture today. Changes were derived from the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture.

The Rollover
The electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e-EVR) system will be shut down at noon EDT 3 April 2012 so that NCARB can transfer your experience to a new reporting system, which will be available on 5 April 2012. You and your supervisor will not be able to submit, review, or approve experience reports from April 3-5.
Here is how the rollover will work:
- All experience entered into the e-EVR prior to 3 April 2012 will be rolled over to IDP 2.0.
- For interns who have satisfied an existing minimum or exceeded a new maximum, exemptions and one-time waivers may be applicable.
- To receive any exemptions or waivers, hours must be submitted to your supervisor, mentor, or NCARB and be in the submitted or approved status by noon EDT 3 April 2012.
- Hours with a saved status will be rolled over to their related experience areas and categories; however, hours in the saved status will not be considered for an exemption or waiver.
- All hours are subject to review and evaluation by NCARB for compliance with the program. Experience must be validated and subsequently approved by NCARB for an exemption or waiver to be finalized.
IDP 2.0 Experience Categories and Areas
The current training requirement will be replaced with four experience categories and 17 experience areas relevant to architecture practice today.

Splits and Combinations
Most current training areas will correspond directly to an IDP 2.0 experience area. However, two of the current training areas will be split into two different experience areas and categories. One IDP 2.0 experience area will be a combination of two current training areas. Learn more
Core Minimum Requirements: Old vs. New
The core minimum hours required for several areas and categories are changing. If you have satisfied the core minimum hours for an area under the current program, you will be exempt from meeting the core minimum hours in the corresponding experience area under the new program. If you have met all of the core minimum requirements within a category, you will be exempt from the new category requirement. You must still satisfy the 3,740 core minimum hours required, but the additional hours may be earned in any area or category.

IDP 2.0 Experience Settings
The current seven work settings that interns must be employed in to earn hours will be simplified into three experience settings: A, O, and S. Learn more
Experience Settings: Old vs. New
Interns must earn a minimum of 1,860 hours in experience setting A. Experience settings O and S have maximum allowable hours. All submitted or approved experience will be rolled over to the new experience settings. If your experience earned through existing work settings exceeds the maximum allowable hours that can be earned in the corresponding IDP 2.0 experience setting, you may be granted a one-time waiver to the maximum allowable hours. If you are granted a one-time waiver, you will not be allowed to earn any additional hours in the new experience setting. Learn More
Work Setting B
Interns that are currently in work setting B should carefully review the definition of experience setting A. In some cases, interns in work setting B may be able to earn experience under experience setting A in IDP 2.0. All hours earned in the current work setting B will be rolled over to the new experience setting O.

Preparing for the Rollover
Plan for it. There are several things you can do to prepare for the rollover to IDP 2.0.
- Read NCARB's Intern's IDP 2.0 Rollover Guide.
- Meet with your supervisor.
- Meet with your mentor.
- Look into supplementary education opportunities to help you meet current program minimum requirements.
- Report qualifying experience well in advance of 3 April 2012.
