IDP Coordinating Committee Charges

  1. Coordinate the internship-related activities between and among NCARB and the AIA, ACSA and AIAS.

  2. Report to the NCARB Board of Directors and AIA Executive Committee any policies, decisions, or general areas that would be of concern to NCARB or AIA regarding the overall IDP program.

  3. Utilize the data from the 2005 Internship and Career Survey and the 2005 Internship Conference to inform the work of the Committee. Based on this information, review the Action Items and Timeline contained in the March 2005 IDP Evaluation Final Report and prepare specific recommendations for program elements in need of evaluation by NCARB and AIA. Determine which evaluations could be conducted by AIA or NCARB staff, and have them complete by June 30, 2006. Implement the top three priority items in the March Report by June 30, 2006.

  4. Study existing performance-based training programs such as the University of Hawaii Practicum Studio, how the Emerging Professionals Companion is being used by firms as a performance-based training resource, and how CIDP has been implemented in selected California firms. Make recommendations to the NCARB Board of Directors in April 2006 on how such programs could be implemented and recognized within the IDP system. The following ideas should also be assessed:

    • Evaluate the potential of an “accredited teaching firm” providing comprehensive, performance-based training in the IDP process.

    • Evaluate the potential of an “accredited practice academy” providing comprehensive, performance-based training in the IDP process.
  5. Review the possibilities of renaming IDP to incorporate more positive terminology, such as "Emerging Professional Experiences" or "Intern Architect Practice", or....Recommend a new nomenclature that better represents both the recent graduate and the process, as it should be viewed.
