July 2007
Boston, Massachusetts Attorney Daniel A. Taylor,
Receives NCARB’s President's Medal for Distinguished Service
Washington, DC—National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ President Robert E. Luke, AIA, (2006-
2007) recently awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service to Daniel A. Taylor, of Boston, MA, in
recognition of his many outstanding contributions to NCARB. Taylor is a senior attorney at DLA Piper, where he
focuses his practice on real estate and business law.
Since July 2002 when he was named legal counsel for NCARB, Taylor has guided the Council through matters as
diverse—and as complicated—as developing a cohesive response to security infractions involving the Architect
Registration Examination® (ARE®) to re-envisioning NCARB’s employee retirement program. He also served as
legal counsel for the Committee on Professional Conduct for 22 years, where he helped maintain the highest standards
of ethical and professional conduct for the architectural profession. In addition, he authored the Professional
Conduct monograph, a perennial best seller in the Council’s highly regarded health, safety and welfare monograph
series.
Taylor was honored during NCARB's 88th Annual Meeting and Conference, held last month in Denver, CO. The
President's Medal awards program was established in 1994 to recognize those individuals who dedicate part of
their careers, energy, and wisdom to benefit the work of NCARB, the public, and the architectural profession.
Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois, a Masters of Arts from the University of
California at Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
Taylor is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Real Estate. He has been involved with the development or
redevelopment of suburban and downtown projects of over 6.5 million square feet, including office towers, mixed
use, telecom, research and development, hotels, and housing; structuring and negotiating complex real estate developments,
financings, and related transactions; procurement; construction; permitting, regulatory, and government
relations. He also provides counseling on a wide variety of legal and business matters to companies and nonprofit
organizations.
Taylor's professional leadership includes his service on the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees, The New
England Regional Advisory Committee, Trust for Public Lands, and the Massachusetts Board of Regents for
Higher Education. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce,
Concord Academy, Beacon Hill Village, Shady Hill School, Arts/Boston, Inc., Beacon Hill Civic Association, and
Hill House, Inc. In 1988, Taylor was General Counsel for the Dukakis-Bentsen for President-Vice President
Campaign.
