Two Join NCARB Senior Staff

Washington, DC—The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) recently promoted Mary de Sousa, CPA, and welcomed Harry M. Falconer Jr., AIA, to its senior staff.

Mary S. de Sousa, CPA
Formerly the Council’s controller since 1989, Mary de Sousa has been named the new Director, Finance and Administration. She will lead a multifaceted directorate that focuses on NCARB’s accounting, human resources, information systems, mailroom, and records management operations. She will provide staff support to the Finance/Management Committee as well as represent the Council as a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards (FARB).

De Sousa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a licensed CPA in the state of Maryland. She also is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). In June 2001, de Sousa received the NCARB President’s Medal in recognition of her distinguished service to the Council and its mission to protect the health, safety and welfare of the American public.

Harry M. Falconer Jr., AIA
Harry Falconer has joined the NCARB staff as the Assistant Director, Record Services. Falconer will lead a team with the managers of Record Evaluations, Record Operations, and Quality Assurance departments with the goal to improve and maintain the quality and efficiency of the Record Services Department. He will provide professional support for the Intern Development Program (IDP) and Certificate Record evaluations services; and provide staff support to the IDP Committee and IDP Coordinating Committee, among other responsibilities. Falconer previously served as campus architect for The George Washington University. He holds a bachelor of architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is licensed to practice architecture in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Falconer also is a member of the American Institute of Architects, has been certified as a construction documents technologist by the Construction Specifications Institute, and holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity.

NCARB comprises the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. NCARB assists its member state registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.

The mission of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards is to work together as a council of member boards to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public and to assist member boards in carrying out their duties. In order to achieve these goals, the Council develops and recommends standards to be required of an applicant for architectural registration; develops and recommends standards regulating the practice of architecture; provides to member boards a process for certifying the qualifications of an architect for registration; and represents the interests of member boards before public and private agencies. With the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC), NCARB has also established guidelines for the reciprocal registration of U.S. and Canadian architects.
