Over 10,000 Architects respond to 2007 Practice Analysis Survey of Architects

Washington, DC—The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards received 10,038 responses to the 2007 Practice Analysis Survey of Architects from architects in the United States and Canada. The survey was sent via e-mail on 9 April 2007 and was received by 49,624 architects. Survey recipients had until 7 May 2007 to complete the survey electronically.

Respondents were asked to rate a range of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to practice architecture independently while safeguarding the public health, safety, and welfare. The results will serve as the basis for reviewing and updating the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) and the Intern Development Program (IDP). This is the first time that IDP will be formally linked to the Practice Analysis Survey.

Prometric, NCARB’s test development and psychometric consultant, administered the online survey. All responses collected will be kept confidential. It is anticipated that the results of the 2007 NCARB Practice Analysis will be distributed in early 2008.

The 2007 Practice Analysis Survey of Architects is an update of the Practice Analysis Survey published in 2001. The last survey was sent to 4,600 architects, interns, and educators and had a response rate of 36 percent, or approximately 1,656 responses. The information collected spurred the current evolution of the ARE. In comparison, this year’s survey yielded more than six times as many responses, providing significantly more data to utilize.

NCARB would like to thank all of the architects who took the time to respond to the survey. The responses they provided will be a valuable to tool for the Council as it works to review and evolve both IDP and the ARE.

NCARB wishes to thank the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC) for their assistance in making this survey available to as many architects as possible.
