Architects Asked to Participate in NCARB’s Practice Analysis Survey

Washington, DC—Architects from around the United States and Canada are invited to participate in the 2007 NCARB Practice Analysis Survey of Architects.

Beginning April 9, NCARB Certificate holders and AIA members may receive an e-mail invitation to participate in the online survey. The survey will take approximately 40 minutes to complete and can be saved and completed in multiple sessions. Respondents will be asked to rate a range of knowledge, skills, and abilities and provide commentary where appropriate. Participants will have until May 7, 2007 to complete the survey.

The 2007 Practice Analysis is a systematic plan to collect data that reliably and accurately describes the knowledge and skills necessary to practice architecture independently while safeguarding the public health, safety, and welfare.

The last study was published in 2001 and spurred the ongoing evolution of the Architect Registration Examination. Participation in this year’s survey is critical as the results will provide information for reviewing and updating the Intern Development Program (IDP) and the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

Prometric, NCARB’s test development and psychometric consultant, will administer the online survey. All responses collected will be kept confidential. It is anticipated that the results of the 2007 NCARB Practice Analysis will be distributed in early 2008.

Those who do not receive the survey, but would like to participate, should contact Malia Stroble at
mstroble@ncarb.org. Only registered architects may complete the survey and will need to provide proof of valid licensure in order to participate.

NCARB wishes to thank the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC) for their assistance in making this survey available to as many architects as possible.

About NCARB
NCARB comprises the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. NCARB assists its member state registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.

The mission of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards is to work together as a council of member boards to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public and to assist member boards in carrying out their duties. In order to achieve these goals, the Council develops and recommends standards to be required of an applicant for architectural registration; develops and recommends standards regulating the practice of architecture; provides to member boards a process for certifying the qualifications of an architect for registration; and represents the interests of member boards before public and private agencies. With the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC), NCARB has also established guidelines for the reciprocal registration of U.S. and Canadian architects.
