Cracking the Codes:
An Architect's Guide to Building Regulations
"To discover a new
rule is to discover a new avenue of expression."
Louis B. Kahn
Although building codes
and standards are often seen as obstacles to design excellence,
NCARB's newly published monograph, Cracking the Codes,
makes them accessible by promoting a sound understanding
of regulatory issueswithout overwhelming the reader
with minutiae.
Features
- Monograph chapters move through each
stage of the planning process to identify and consolidate
the basic regulatory requirements that must be addressed.
- The monograph covers zoning ordinances
and covenants, as well as rules related to accessibility,
historic preservation, environmental quality, and consumer
protection, among other critical issues.
- Information is extensively cross-referenced
to make topics easy to find. A uniform methodology is applied
to each regulatory issue.
- Unique feature: a two-part quiz. Either
quiz may be taken in any order. The first quiz covers chapters
1-6, and the second quiz covers chapters 7-12. Quiz #2
meets the Texas requirement for one hour of instruction
in issues related to barrier-free design.
