Sustainable Design
"Designing sustainably offers me the
possibility to celebrate the continual renewal of life by
creating in ways that honor both human purpose and the living
world."
Sim Van der Ryn
Founder of Van der Ryn Architects and the Ecological Design
Institute
Sustainable design is based on the concept
of sustainability or the state where interdependent natural,
social, and economic systems prosper today without compromising
their future prosperity. The Sustainable Design monograph
offers a balanced overview of this complex topic.
Features
- The monograph provides a comprehensive
investigation of sustainable design benefits and elements.
- Individual case studies further explore
five sustainable elementsenergy, site, air, water,
and materials. Basic design strategies for each element
are also discussed.
- A detailed implementation section for
sustainable design projects closes the monograph. Two major
steps are identified: First, economic, ecological, and social
value systems must be given long-term consideration. Second,
interdependent connections between seemingly unrelated elements
must be recognized as well.
- A glossary of terms, bibliography,
and comprehensive resource guide are provided as well.
