New Orleans—President Dale McKinney, FAIA, NCARB, welcomed Member Boards to the 96th Annual Business Meeting of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in New Orleans today. Throughout the three-day conference, delegates will discuss changes to our programs, vote on resolutions, and elect new officers.
Getting Back on the Path to Licensure
The Board of Directors (BOD) is proposing a path for professionals with valid work experience that falls outside the limits of the Intern Development Program (IDP). During the meeting, Member Boards will provide feedback on this option, so the BOD can develop a proposal for comments later this summer. Read more about the proposed path.
The Transformative Power of Architecture
Kurt Weigle, president and CEO of the Downtown Development District (DDD) of New Orleans, delivered an inspirational keynote speech on the city’s rejuvenation efforts. In the years since Hurricane Katrina, the group has worked tirelessly to drive the development of Downtown New Orleans—from making the city more sustainable to building better infrastructure to protect against future storms. “When people talk about why the architecture of New Orleans is so special, they talk about the joyfulness, the space, the visual richness, and the human scale,” Weigle said.
Advancing the Profession
In the afternoon, attendees participated in workshops related to advancing the profession, the role of regulators, managing sunset reviews, and dealing with the illegal practice of architecture.
The five candidates running for NCARB offices addressed delegates. The candidates are:
- First Vice President/President-elect: Kristine A. Harding, AIA, NCARB, from Scottsboro, AL; and Margo P. Jones, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, from Greenfield, MA
- Second Vice President: Gregory L. Erny, AIA, NCARB, from Reno, NV
- Treasurer: David L. Hoffman, FAIA, NCARB, from Wichita, KS
- Secretary: Terry L. Allers, AIA, NCARB, from Fort Dodge, IA
Elections will take place on Saturday.
Countdown to NCARB’s Centennial: 1940s and 1950s
In 2019, NCARB will commemorate its 100th anniversary! In its early years, the Council was driven by its founding members—many of whom offered everything from office space to personal capital to get the organization off the ground. By 1940, NCARB began to take shape, eventually opening its first office in 1958. This time period also saw the formation of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), plus the adoption of a new constitution and Bylaws. Stay tuned over the next four years as we take a deeper dive into NCARB’s history.
