Gregory Erny

Boston—Gregory L. Erny, FAIA, NCARB, was inaugurated as the 98th president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at its Annual Business Meeting. As president, the Reno, NV, architect will lead the organization that supports the 54 U.S. architectural licensing boards, which serve more than 111,000 licensure candidates and architects.

“NCARB plays an increasingly vital role in advocating for architectural regulation, both for our Member Boards and the public,” Erny said. “We will continue to improve our programs for individuals at every stage of their architecture career while ensuring the public remains protected.”

During his term, Erny will focus on exploring new ways NCARB can meet the needs of the evolving profession, improving the relationship between licensure candidates and supervisors, emphasizing the value of architectural licensure, and strengthening reciprocal licensure through the NCARB Certificate.

First appointed to the Nevada Board of Architecture, Interior Design, and Residential Design in 1996, Erny served two terms as the Nevada Board chair from 2000-2003 and 2011-2014. He has been a dedicated NCARB volunteer for two decades, offering his time and expertise to numerous committees—including several related to the development and evolution of the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®), the national exam used to test a licensure candidate’s knowledge and skills.

Since 2008, Erny has served in several positions on the NCARB Board of Directors, including terms as first vice president/president-elect, second vice president, secretary, and regional director of NCARB’s Western Conference (Region 6). He has also been a valuable member of the Professional Conduct, Procedures and Documents, and Professional Development committees, as well as chair of the Regional Leadership Committee.

Erny opened his own practice, Architects + LLC, in 1983, just two years after earning his initial license. He continues to serve as president of his firm and remains an active member of the Nevada Board. Erny is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), having served as president of AIA Northern Nevada and AIA Nevada. He is the recipient of the AIA Nevada Silver Medal and was elevated to the AIA’s College of Fellows in May 2017. Erny remains heavily involved in his community, acting as a commissioner for the City of Reno’s Historic Resources Commission, chairman of the Bailey Charter Elementary School Board, and director on the Nevada Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Erny graduated from Ball State University with both a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Bachelor of Architecture. He has been an NCARB Certificate holder since 1998 and is currently licensed in Nevada and California.

About NCARB

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB assists its member registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.

NCARB protects the public health, safety, and welfare by leading the regulation of the practice of architecture through the development and application of standards for licensure and credentialing of architects. In order to achieve these goals, the Council develops and recommends standards to be required of an applicant for architectural registration; develops and recommends standards regulating the practice of architecture; provides to Member Boards a process for certifying the qualifications of an architect for registration; and represents the interests of Member Boards before public and private agencies. NCARB has established reciprocal registration for architects in the United States and Canada.
