Important: Effective September 1, 2019, quizzes for NCARB’s long-format monographs are no longer available, although we will continue to offer our popular mini-monographs for continuing education credit.
Most of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions require that architects earn continuing education before each license renewal. Check your jurisdiction’s requirements. To help architectural licensing boards, architects, continuing education (CE) providers, and CE accreditors better understand what qualifies as health, safety, and welfare (HSW) CE, NCARB has published Continuing Education Guidelines. The document outlines the subjects or topics that learning programs must address to be considered HSW CE.
Thanks to our exclusive Monograph Series, you can easily earn the learning unit credits you need to update your professional skills and maintain your license. By completing online quizzes, you can earn hours in HSW from the comfort of your own home, office, or mobile device.
Continue developing your professional skills by completing self-study courses on topics like fire safety, professional conduct, and building performance. Our Monograph Series offers architects an independent, cost-effective way to earn learning units in HSW at their own convenience.
Every mini-monograph includes a short article and related quiz, offering 1 to 2.5 AIA Learning Units, most of which qualify as HSW. The majority of our monographs are part of a multi-part series, written by recognized experts, allowing you to dig deep into a topic.
Mini-monographs are free for NCARB Certificate holders and licensure candidates with active NCARB Records. Mini-monographs are also available for purchase by individuals without an active NCARB Record.
How to Earn LUs:
- If you’re an NCARB Certificate holder, you’ll receive an email notification about the latest mini-monographs each month, or you can browse our full monograph collection.
- After you download your monograph, you are eligible to take the quiz. Take the quiz by logging in to your My NCARB account, selecting “Monographs,” and choosing the desired monograph from the list. Note: You’ll need to “purchase” a mini-monograph by filling out your billing information before taking the quiz. However, if you have an active NCARB Record you will not be charged.
- You’ll see your results immediately and will have the option to either print your certificate of completion or retake the quiz. Your passing score is automatically reported

In addition, NCARB offers reference copies of our long-format digital Monographs, and book-format (hardcopy) Monographs. While these are no longer eligible for AIA continuing education credit as of September 1, 2019, they continue to serve as valuable reference material.
Digital Monographs are free for NCARB Certificate holders and active Record holders. Our printed Monograph books (for reference only) are also available free to active Record holders for a $20 shipping fee, plus tax.
