Read the AXP Guidelines

Learn how to document your experience and see a list of all competencies with the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®) Guidelines.

Please note: The AXP Portfolio is designed for unlicensed individuals who need to complete the experience component for initial licensure, and cannot complete AXP through the hourly reporting method. You will still need to meet your jurisdiction’s education requirement and complete the ARE to earn a license.

By completing an online portfolio, experienced designers can use examples of work that is older than five years to satisfy the AXP.

Through this option, you’ll demonstrate your competency in the AXP Portfolio’s 96 tasks by uploading exhibits—documents, PDFs, images, or other files—of work for approval by your supervisor. Learn more about completing the AXP Portfolio.

This method is designed for individuals in the AEC field—such as designers and project managers—who may have put their licensure goals on hold due to career, personal, or economic reasons. To qualify for the AXP Portfolio, you must:

  • Not hold a license to practice architecture in any of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions or Canada
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience that meets the requirements of the AXP and is older than five years, as defined in the employment history section of the AXP Guidelines
  • Have a current architect supervisor who meets the requirements to approve your portfolio
  • All experience must have occurred post high school graduation or an established equivalent
