U.S. architects without a degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) can pursue an NCARB Certificate through NCARB’s Education Alternative to Certification program. The program includes two paths that enable architects to satisfy the education requirement for NCARB certification. Which path you are eligible to pursue will depend on your educational background, as evaluated by NCARB:
- Two Times AXP: Document double the AXP’s requirements (7,480 hours total); or
- NCARB Certificate Portfolio: Submit a portfolio of your work that demonstrates learning through your experience as a licensed architect
What is Two Times AXP?
To qualify for the Two Times AXP path, licensed architects must hold a bachelor’s degree that includes significant coursework in architecture, as determined by NCARB. The program must be offered at an institution with U.S. regional accreditation, or the Canadian equivalent. If you meet these requirements and are approved for the program, you will document two times the required hours in each of the AXP’s six practice areas—including any hours you have already reported.
What is NCARB Certificate Portfolio?
If you do not have a four-year degree with significant coursework in Architecture, you may qualify for the Certificate Portfolio path. This path is for licensed individuals who have an associate’s degree, a four-year degree in an unrelated field, or no college degree. If you are approved for the program, you will submit a collection of exhibits from your work that demonstrate learning through your experience as a licensed architect. All submitted projects must be completed post-licensure.
Depending on your educational background, you may also qualify for a program called the Education Evaluation Services for Architects (EESA). You may use an EESA to receive credit for some of your education, reducing the number of portfolio exhibits required. Obtaining an EESA is optional for the Certificate Portfolio path.

Why should I become NCARB-certified?
Not all jurisdictions accept licensed architects without a degree from a NAAB-accredited program for reciprocal licensure; however, the majority of jurisdictions do accept architects who received the NCARB Certificate through the Education Alternative. If you plan to become licensed in multiple jurisdictions, the NCARB Certificate demonstrates that you meet the national standards for licensure in the United States and can simplify the process of obtaining reciprocal licenses. Check the Licensing Requirements Tool to learn which jurisdictions accept the NCARB Certificate through the Education Alternative.
The NCARB Certificate offers several other benefits, including:
- Flexibility to apply for reciprocal licensure in the U.S. and internationally
- Free library of continuing education courses
- Ability to use the “NCARB” credential in your title
- And more!
