While each jurisdiction’s state licensing board is responsible for regulating the practice of architecture within its borders, NCARB develops and oversees the national programs—i.e., the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) and Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®)—for candidates pursuing a license. To become an architect, candidates typically need to 1) Earn a degree 2) Gain and document professional experience, and 3) Pass the national licensing exam.
