Progress on Pathways to Practice

The first half of FY26 brought several milestones to this initiative. NCARB expanded access to NCARB certification for architects from a wider range of educational backgrounds, took a position on federal education policy affecting the profession, and continued advancing work on future licensure models with the Licensure Research & Development Task Force and our Board of Directors.

Implementing the Competency Standard for Architects

NCARB has been steadily aligning its core programs with the Competency Standard for Architects. Effective November 18, 2025, NCARB launched updates to the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®), including a new experience reporting policy, revised experience area descriptions, and expanded opportunities to earn experience through professional development courses. Minor Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) updates are also on the horizon, scheduled to launch April 27, 2026.

These changes aim to ensure NCARB's programs better reflect the capabilities needed at the point of initial licensure, while addressing common administrative challenges candidates face along the way.

Supporting Our Member Boards

As Pathways to Practice continues to evolve, Member Board guidance remains essential to shaping what comes next. NCARB will continue engaging members throughout the second half of FY26, including at the upcoming Regional Summit and the Annual Business Meeting in June.
