National Council of Architectural Registration Boards President C. Robert Campbell, FAIA, (2002-2003) awarded the President's Medal for distinguished service to five individuals associated with the Council who have made significant contributions to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare through their service to NCARB and to the practice of architecture.

The 2003 medals were awarded at the close of NCARB's Annual Meeting and Conference, held last month in San Antonio, Texas. The President's Medal was first awarded in 1994 in order to recognize those individuals who dedicate a large part of their careers, energy, and wisdom to benefit the work of NCARB, the public, and the architectural profession.

Stephen A. Usry, AIA, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a well-respected advocate for the architectural profession's most vital constituency: its student/intern population. Among his many leadership responsibilities, Usry has been a chair and member of NCARB's Committee on the Intern Development Program (IDP) and has served as South Carolina's IDP State Coordinator. From 1990 through 2003, he was appointed to the South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners, where he was twice elected chair. Usry is the president of Usry Wolfe Koll Architecture, Inc., of Myrtle Beach, and is registered to practice in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Bonnie Larson Staiger is an adept professional who juggles the complimentary responsibilities as executive director of both the North Dakota State Board of Architecture and the North Dakota chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Staiger was honored for her long-term contributions to NCARB, which include chairing the Member Board Executives Committee in 2002-2003. Under her tutelage, the MBE Committee developed a wide range of resources benefiting both veteran and novice board executives.

Lynn Webster, FRAIC, former chair of the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils, was honored for her support of the joint mission uniting U.S. and Canadian architects in their efforts to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. Webster is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and currently serves as the immediate past president of the Alberta Association of Architects. She is a partner and project architect at The Cohos Evamy Partners, based in Calgary, Alberta, where she has compiled a remarkable record of achievement in the research, programming, and design of health care environments.

Kim Kerker, NCARB's assistant director, communications, was recognized for her diverse contributions to Council endeavors. Kerker oversees the design, development, and distribution of all publications—everything from committee-based special papers to newsletters to fliers and postcards. Her talents also account for the high quality of the NCARB convention booth and the eye-catching appeal of Council logo items. As a gifted designer and editor, Kerker has been a guiding principal in perfecting the Council's "public face."

As NCARB's Director of Professional Development, Stephen Nutt, AIA, oversees all aspects of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), the nine-division test taken by all candidates in the U.S. and Canada seeking architectural licensing, and supervises the Council's continuing education monograph program. His division also provides outsourced administrative services to the Member Boards. He was honored for his consummate professionalism and good humor-qualities that lend themselves to the challenging process of crafting the ARE.
