Cathy Morrison

Scottsdale, AZ—Catherine C. Morrison, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, NOMA, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was elected as a regional director at the National Council of Architectural Registration Board's (NCARB) 2025 Annual Business Meeting. Morrison was nominated to serve on the NCARB Board of Directors by Region 3 (Southeastern Conference), which represents 12 licensing boards across the Southeastern United States. 

Morrison was appointed to the North Carolina Board of Architecture in 2018 and has served as the board’s president since 2022, having previously held the position of vice president from 2020-2022 and secretary from 2019-2020. She was elected by her peers to serve as the chair of NCARB’s Region 3 in 2024, after serving as secretary/treasurer from 2022-2023 and secretary in 2021. 

As a dedicated volunteer, Morrison has served on several NCARB committees, including the Regional Realignment Work Group, the Governance Work Group, the Experience Committee, and the Strategic Focus Group. She has also served as chair of the Credentials Committee and is currently a member of the Regional Leadership Committee. Morrison has also held numerous leadership positions with the American Institute of Architects, including president of the Charlotte Section from 2014-2015 and section representative to the North Carolina Chapter board of directors. Outside of work, she is an active member of the City of Charlotte Business Advisory Committee and serves on the board of directors for Nourish Up, a nonprofit tackling food insecurity in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. 

Morrison currently serves as the chief executive officer of Neighboring Concepts in Charlotte, a position she has held since 2021. She was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2025 and has received numerous honors throughout her career, including the NCARB President's Medal for Distinguished Service, AIA North Carolina's Detrick Service Medal, and the AIA Charlotte Citizen Architect Award.  

Morrison is a graduate of the University of Maryland and holds both a master’s degree in architecture and master of geography from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is licensed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia. She earned her license to practice architecture in 2010, and holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural licensing boards of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB, in collaboration with these boards, facilitates the licensure and credentialing of architects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.  

To achieve these goals, NCARB works with its Member Boards and volunteers to develop and facilitate standards for licensure, including the national examination and experience program. NCARB also recommends regulatory guidelines for licensing boards and helps architects expand their professional reach through the NCARB Certificate.
