Washington, DC—David W. Hornbeek, AIA, NCARB, of Edmond, Oklahoma, was elected as a regional director at the National Council of Architectural Registration Board’s 2020 Annual Business Meeting. Hornbeek was nominated to serve on the NCARB Board of Directors by Region 5 (Central States), which is comprised of Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
Hornbeek first joined the Oklahoma Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers in 1984, where he served as chair for two terms until 1989, and joined the Oklahoma Board again in 2001, serving an additional two terms as chair. Prior to his election as Region 5 director on the NCARB Board of Directors, Hornbeek served as chair, vice chair, and secretary/treasurer of the region.
In 2012, Hornbeek began offering his time and expertise to NCARB by joining the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) Building Systems Subcommittee. Since then, his dedication to NCARB has grown, serving on the Education, Policy Advisory, and Regional Leadership committees. He has also been a member of the Continuing Education Subcommittee, serving as chair in 2016, and has represented NCARB on National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) visiting teams.
Now practicing for 40 years, Hornbeek is the principal of Hornbeek Blatt Architects and has designed several restaurants, resorts, hotels, master planned communities, sports arenas, higher educational facilities, and public service centers across the country. He also served as chair of the Central States Regional Design Awards Program, as well as the director and vice president of the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA) Central Oklahoma Chapter.
Hornbeek holds three degrees from the University of Oklahoma—including a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design, a Bachelor of Architecture, and a Master of Architecture—where he’s also served as a visiting adjunct professor and member of the school’s Professional Advisory Board and Board of Visitors. He holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity and is licensed to practice in Oklahoma.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural licensing boards of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB, in collaboration with these boards, facilitates the licensure and credentialing of architects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
To achieve these goals, NCARB works with its Member Boards and volunteers to develop and facilitate standards for licensure, including the national examination and experience program. NCARB also recommends regulatory guidelines for licensing boards and helps architects expand their professional reach through the NCARB Certificate.
