On Sunday, September 28, architecture students from across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area gathered at the National Building Museum for the annual Interschool Design Competition. Organized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Northern Virginia, Potomac Valley, and DC chapters, the competition brings students together to collaborate, innovate, and push the boundaries of design.

Exploring Accessibility Through Design
This year’s challenge asked students to consider how design can foster accessibility and social connection while honoring the historic Pennsylvania Avenue neighborhood in Washington, DC. Teams were tasked with preserving the site’s cultural and historical significance, while reimagining it as an active, welcoming, and inclusive space that reflects today’s society.
Throughout the competition, students worked in interdisciplinary teams with guidance from mentors in the architecture and design industry. Their concepts explored creative ways to balance history with modern needs—proving how design can shape environments that encourage interaction and belonging.

Collaboration Across Local Programs
Each team represented a collaboration between students from multiple accredited architecture programs in the DC area, including:
- The Catholic University of America
- Howard University
- Morgan State University
- University of Maryland
- University of the District of Columbia
- Washington Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) – Virginia Tech
By working together, students expanded their perspectives and learned to communicate across design approaches—skills that will serve them throughout their careers.

NCARB’s Role in Supporting Emerging Architects
NCARB is proud to sponsor the Interschool Design Competition as part of our mission to support the next generation of architects. Students who participated in the event earned AXP credits, allowing them to take another step closer to their licensure goals.
By providing this sponsorship, NCARB aims to connect with local students, highlight the value of experiential learning, and reinforce the importance of innovative design in shaping our communities.

Looking Ahead
The winners of the 2025 Interschool Design Competition will be announced in October, with prizes awarded to the top teams for their innovative, thoughtful approaches to this year’s challenge.
