Number of Aspiring Architects on the Rise

Think the profession is dying? Data from the 2015 edition of NCARB by the Numbers suggests otherwise. More than 37,000 aspiring architects were testing and/or reporting experience last year—the highest number to date. In the last year, the percentage of Intern Development Program (IDP) completions jumped 85 percent, and Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) completions increased by 17 percent.

“The profile and performance of those entering the architecture profession is changing,” said NCARB CEO Michael Armstrong. “Licensing boards have certainly played a significant role in these changes, adopting new rules and laws. These changes, along with improved communications and customer service, have had a direct impact on behaviors along the path to licensure.”

This year’s report is filled with stats on everything from the number of licensed architects to the average age of initial licensure. Plus, we included baseline comparisons for each jurisdiction, so you can see how candidates in your home state compare to the national average.
