Balancing the requirements to earn a degree in architecture and earning professional experience can be challenging to navigate on your own. That’s why your university or school appoints licensing advisors to provide the guidance you need for success!

What is a university/school licensing advisor?

University or school licensing advisors are typically faculty members or career counselors appointed to support licensure candidates during their tenure in their academic program. They dedicate their time to help students through the first steps of the licensure process, including providing insight into starting the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®), meeting licensure requirements, and more.

How can I find a licensing advisor at my university or school?

National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited architecture programs and American Institute of Architects (AIA state chapters are expected to have an appointed advisor. You can find contact information for your school’s appointed advisor using our Licensing Advisor Lookup Tool.

Don’t see an advisor listed for your school? Please contact your school leadership and inquire about who is in this role, or share the position description with them to help guide them on appointing an advisor and getting support for students at your university who need it!

How can I become a licensing advisor at my university or school?

To become a faculty licensing advisor, you must be a current faculty member or career counselor/experience coordinator. University or school leadership, including deans and department chairs, can appoint licensing advisors.

If you are being appointed by your academic institution, the individual responsible for making the appointment should notify NCARB by sending an email to advisors@ncarb.org. Be sure to provide your name and contact information. As an appointed advisor, your contact information is required to be listed publicly on NCARB’s website at www.ncarb.org/advisors.
