More About the Competency Standard
Initially launched in 2024, the NCARB Competency Standard for Architects establishes 16 knowledge areas, skills, abilities, and behaviors—called competencies—that describe the capabilities necessary for newly licensed architects to protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare. Over the past fiscal year, NCARB volunteers have developed and refined measurement criteria for each competency listed in the Competency Standard, providing specific context for the capabilities expected of anyone upon earning an initial license. In addition to new criteria, the latest version of the Competency Standard also includes commentary, indicated by footnotes, to help you understand how terminology used throughout the document is applied in practice.
How the Changes Impact You
If you’re currently working toward an architecture license, the specific measurement criteria for each competency can serve as a guidepost in your professional development—such as what skills you should focus on while you complete the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®). Architects can use the new criteria to guide their continuing education efforts, while AXP supervisors, licensing advisors, and mentors can use this resource to better serve the next generation of architects. As our volunteers explore potential new methods of assessing competency through the Pathways to Practice initiative, the level of detail in the criteria will ensure that candidates’ competency is evaluated consistently across all pathways to initial licensure. More About Pathways to Practice
Through the Pathways to Practice initiative, NCARB is reimagining the licensure process—exploring new methods of assessing competency that have evolved thanks to advancements in technology and practice. As we work to update our current programs to align with the Competency Standard, we’re also using the Competency Standard as the foundation for a future licensure model that is more accessible to licensure candidates across different backgrounds.
