Do I need an NCARB Certificate to apply for licensure in another jurisdiction?

Do I need an AXP mentor?

Having an experienced architect to offer instruction, encouragement, and advice can be extremely beneficial as you navigate the path to licensure. While your mentor won’t typically monitor your experience reports, there are certain opportunities where they can act as an AXP supervisor.

Do I need an active license to maintain my NCARB Certificate?

Yes—an active license is required to maintain your NCARB certification.

Do exam seat credits expire?

Yes, any purchased seat credits not used to schedule a division will expire one year after the date of purchase.

Can licensure candidates access NCARB’s Continuum Education Program?

Licensure candidates with an active NCARB Record have free access to NCARB’s Continuum Education Program. Plus, you can earn up to 10 hours of AXP experience by reading the Professional Conduct series and passing the quiz.

Can I wear headphones or a headset during my online ARE appointment?

No, you cannot wear headphones during your online proctoring appointment. Before you launch your appointment, be sure to adjust your computer volume to a comfortable setting, as you will be unable to adjust it once you launch the exam.

Can I use scratch paper during my exam?

No, ARE 5.0 candidates (both online and in person) cannot use physical scratch paper while taking the ARE. Candidates can use a digital whiteboard tool instead, which you can practice using in the demo exam

Can I use my NCARB Certificate to apply for licensure in other countries?

Can I use my computer's or monitor's webcam to take the ARE online?

Yes, you can use an integrated webcam to take the ARE. The webcam must have an autofocus capability.

Can I use multiple monitors to take the ARE online?

No, you cannot use multiple screens and/or monitors during the exam. While you may choose to connect a laptop to one external monitor, your laptop lid will need to be closed during your appointment.
