Does online proctoring work for both Macs and PCs?

No. To test via online proctoring, you must use a device with a native (OEM) Windows Operating System (i.e., not a Mac device running Windows). MacOS, Ubuntu, Linux, and other non-Windows devices are not acceptable. Learn more about technical requirements for online proctoring.

Does NCARB still offer a $50 prepaid card for candidates' first online appointment?

NCARB discontinued the $50 rebate for candidates taking their first online proctored appointment on July 1, 2023.

Does NCARB still deliver the ARE with Prometric?

No, NCARB does not deliver the ARE through Prometric's services, as of May 31, 2022. Going forward, candidates can take the ARE with PSI. 

Does my local licensing board accept exams taken via online proctoring?

Yes! All 55 U.S. licensing boards accept ARE divisions taken via online proctoring as well as in-person. 

Does my jurisdiction require the AXP?

Most of the 55 U.S. licensing boards require the AXP. Keep in mind, your jurisdiction may have additional experience requirements, as each jurisdiction sets its own requirements for initial licensure. Find out if your board accepts the AXP through our  licensing requirements tool.

Does my international work experience count toward fulfillment of the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)?

A maximum of 1,860 hours may be earned for work completed in a country outside the U.S. under the supervision of a licensed architect in that country. If you are working in an architect firm located outside of the U.S. or Canada but the architect is licensed in the U.S. or Canada, then this would qualify as experience setting A.  Learn more about AXP requirements

Do passed divisions expire?

A passing score remains valid throughout the delivery of the ARE version under which it was taken (ARE 4.0) as well as the delivery of the immediately following version of the exam (ARE 5.0). Passed divisions will expire after two versions of the exam. For example: Passed ARE 4.0 divisions will remain valid throughout the delivery of ARE 5.0 and will be retired when NCARB stops delivering ARE 5.0.

Do I need to provide proof of my right to work to pursue UK licensure under the MRA?

No. You are responsible for obtaining the right to work in the United Kingdom per the terms of the Mutual Recognition Agreement, but providing evidence of your right to work is not part of the application process. 

Do I need to complete Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) to renew my NCARB Certificate?

You do  not  need to complete any continuing education hours or learning units to renew your NCARB Certificate.

Do I need an NCARB Record while I’m in school?

You should  establish your NCARB Record once you start earning experience that qualifies for the AXP—which you can do any time after graduating high school.
