Starting June 1, 2026, NCARB will implement two changes to Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) online proctoring requirements.

  • All candidates will be required to use a mobile device as a secondary camera. The mobile device camera must capture the entire computer screen, the full keyboard and mouse or trackpad, both hands while typing, and the side of the candidate’s face.
  • Delivery of the exam through online proctoring will only be supported on computers running a Windows Operating System. Mac and Linux devices will no longer be accepted.

A new version of the ARE Guidelines reflecting both changes will become available in mid-May. Any candidate with a scheduled online proctored appointment on or after June 1 who will not be able to comply with the requirements may reschedule their appointment at no additional cost. Candidates who need help rescheduling an appointment should contact NCARB

Secondary Camera on Mobile Device

To ensure a secure and fair online testing environment, NCARB is requiring all candidates to use a mobile device as a secondary camera during online proctored exam appointments starting June 1. This camera is a new exam security measure that will be used in addition to the webcam on the computer candidates use to take the test.

The device used for the secondary camera must be a fully charged smartphone with working front-facing and back-facing cameras, and have an operating system that is iOS 12, Android 8, or later. Candidates may prop up their device with a sturdy, adjustable phone stand or a heavy object. The online proctor will help each candidate adjust their device’s position. Learn more about online proctoring requirements for testing with a secondary camera.

To confirm that the setup meets online testing requirements, all candidates should complete a free, 30-minute test run with PSI. On or after June 1, proctors administering test runs will verify that the secondary camera setup meets all requirements. Candidates should schedule their test run in advance of their actual ARE appointment to allow time for any necessary adjustments.

Windows Operating System

To ensure a consistent exam delivery experience for all candidates, online proctoring delivery of the ARE will only be supported on devices with a native (OEM) Windows Operating System (i.e., not a Mac device running Windows) starting June 1. Candidates who have scheduled an online proctored appointment on or after June 1 and will not be able to secure a device with a Windows Operating System may reschedule their appointment at no cost. For assistance with rescheduling, candidates should contact NCARB
