What to Expect 

We use Prometric test centers to keep the ARE fair and secure. On your appointment day, you should be ready to: 

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes early
  • Present a valid photo ID (must include your signature)  
  • Have your picture taken 
  • Have your fingertip scanned 
  • Have any eyeglasses, jewelry, and/or other accessories inspected 
  • Be scanned by a metal detector or wand 
  • Leave your personal items outside the testing room

Technical Difficulties 

If you see an error message or experience a computer problem while you’re taking the exam, let the test center staff know immediately. Raise your hand and the test center administrator will come to assist you. 
If the technical difficulties cannot be resolved, your exam will be rescheduled at no cost.

Reporting Concerns

If you have any testing concerns after your appointment, be sure to file a report with the test center administrator AND let us know immediately by emailing customerservice@ncarb.org.  
You should NOT wait until you receive your test results to contact us. Concerns must be received within 15 days of your appointment date.

Testing Accommodations

NCARB and Prometric work to ensure reasonable testing accommodations are available.
