To take an online proctored division of ARE 5.0, candidates must have an external, autofocus webcam to go through the virtual exam security process.

To help offset the potential cost of purchasing an external, autofocus webcam for online proctored testing, NCARB will provide all candidates who schedule their first online appointment a $50 prepaid card.

As an ARE candidate, you are eligible to receive one $50 prepaid card, which will be issued automatically after you schedule your first online proctored appointment. Please note: If you do not schedule an exam appointment to be taken via online proctoring, you will not receive a $50 prepaid card.

How It Works
After you schedule your first online proctored appointment, you will receive an email from with important information about redeeming your $50 prepaid card. Once you receive the email, which could take up to two business days, follow these steps to redeem your card:

  1. Click the link in the email from to redeem your $50 prepaid card.
  2. You will have the option to receive either a physical prepaid card or a virtual prepaid card.
  3. Complete the redemption form to activate your prepaid card. You must complete the redemption process within four months of receiving the initial email from
  4. Once activated, you must use your $50 prepaid card within seven months.

You can use the prepaid card to make a purchase like you would use a credit or debit card. While we encourage you to use the $50 prepaid card to purchase a webcam, you can also use it for other purchases, and you are still eligible to receive the prepaid card if you already have a webcam.
