FAQs

How do I start testing?

Before you can schedule an ARE division, you will need to be approved to test and receive your exam eligibilities. Once you meet your jurisdiction’s requirements, you can easily request eligibility through your NCARB Record. Learn more about requesting exam eligibilities.

How do I schedule an appointment to take an ARE division?

You can easily schedule a division through My NCARB. Learn how to schedule an ARE 5.0 division.

How do I review my candidate’s experience reports?

To review and approve your candidate’s experience reports, you’ll need a free NCARB account. Once your account is set up—including activating your supervisor portal and adding your license information, if applicable—you’ll be able to view any reports your candidate submits. Learn more about reviewing experience reports.

How do I report my experience?

You can report hours through your NCARB Record or by using the My AXP app—free for Apple and Android devices. Learn how to report your hours.

How do I report experience as an architect?

If you are an architect documenting experience for credit toward the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®), the process is slightly different than reporting experience as a licensure candidate. Keep in mind, the five-year reporting requirement that is in place for candidates does not apply to you. Follow these steps to report experience.

How do I report exam-related or other misconduct?

Help NCARB protect the integrity of the exam and the validity of exam scores by reporting any and all security concerns or suspected misconduct to ARESecurity@ncarb.org

For other misconduct related to architects or licensure candidates, please email whistleblower@ncarb.org.

How do I report a testing concern?

If you have questions or comments regarding your exam, you must note the concern to the test center administrator and contact us in writing within 15 days of your test date. Learn more about reporting test concerns in the ARE 5.0 Guidelines.

How do I renew my NCARB Record or Certificate?

You can easily renew your Record or Certificate online. Simply select the “Renew Now” option on your Record homepage. You can only renew if you are within 60 days of your expiration date.

How do I pursue licensure through the U.S./U.K. Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)?

If you are a U.S. architect seeking licensure in the United Kingdom, please confirm that you meet the MRA's eligibility requirements. Then, contact NCARB to get started. If you are a U.K. architect seeking licensure in the United States, please check with the Architects Registration Board (ARB).

How do I obtain the right to work in the United Kingdom under the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA)?

To conduct business in the United Kingdom, you must be granted the right to work there. Neither NCARB nor ARB can provide you with the right to work. You must reach out to the U.K’s Home Office for permission to work in the United Kingdom, typically granted under a visa or other work immigration route.
